The last week was very eventful as we completed activities leading up to our Calgary Corn Maze and Fun Farm. It has been very interesting to observe the improvements in directed drawing activities. As a whole class, we have researched factual information about chickens, pigs, sheep, goats, ducks and corn. While at the farm, the educational component introduced the children to even more farm animals such as miniature ponies, baby turkeys, kittens, kids, and bunnies! There was so much excitement. Another highlight was the mining for gems where pairs of students used a metal grids to shake stones out of the dirt. I hope that you may be able to visit the farm again! Just a reminder to get your hot dog orders in by Tuesday, June 20th.

Last week our class was entertained by the Nickle Junior High Grade 9 Drama students in a production of "Mixed up Fairy Tales".
We continue to add new and challenging centres like locks, keys, nuts and bolts as well as using pattern blocks to replicate pictures. On Wednesday, June 14 we will be boarding a bus for the Calgary Corn Maze and Fun Farm! The Corn Maze is not available at this early stage but the highlight will be the new born farm animals. If it is going to be a sunny day, please provide a hat and sun screen for your child as the area is very wide open to the elements. Well parents, it is really the month of June! Last week we worked daily on researching and completing directed drawings. So far we have drawn and labeled a butterfly, corn on the cob, a pig and a cow! We have learned about food, habitats and fun facts too as a result of the research.
We are getting ready for our field trip to the Calgary Corn Maze and Fun Farm on June 14th. We plan to continue the research and drawings of farm animals in the week ahead! If you have lost or misplaced any forms, then let me know, [email protected] On Monday, July 29th you will receive a parent letter, acknowledgement of risk form and volunteer forms. I understand that you have recently completed these forms for the SOGO trip but we need to have this done for each field trip! Thank you in advance for your patience. We have to make sure that each field trip is safe and sound!
We have just enjoyed the best weather over the May long weekend! The most excitement in our classroom has revolved around the life cycle of the butterfly!
We began with the story of the “Hungry Caterpillar” and now your child as actually witnessed the full life cycle of the butterfly! The other life cycle that we have witnessed in real life is the growth of a bean seed and a tomato seed. Students actually have drawn and labeled the development of a seed in their journals! As well as the chrysalis stage of the butterfly! Such progress! Please continue to send in any magazines that contain pictures of nature so we can complete our project of A – Z nature! Have a great weekend to the awesome community of Lake Bonavista! This Spring has been a season full of learning, discovery and growth. We have experienced a walk to the Fire Station as well as to Fish Creek Park for two awesome field trips. On Wednesday, June 14th, we have a field trip booked for Calgary Corn Maze and Fun Farm. Students will have a day longer than usual as we should be back to the school by 12:45pm. Parents will need to provide a lunch for that day. We are growing some tomato and bean seeds which has been tricky with the days off! The caterpillars are in the chrysalis stage and we are hoping that they will emerge in the next couple of days! We have just begun a show and share time which will take place each morning. Four students will be given a brown bag that they return with a treasure that they would like to talk about and share with their classmates! I am also asking parents to send along pictures from NATURE that can go on our alphabet project. For example, a picture of a flower will be pasted on F. Thank you for your support! Welcome back parents! Thank you so much for your participation in the Student – Led Conferences and the purchasing of wonderful Usborne books.
You may have noticed that we are doing a new inquiry about how seeds grow into plants! A special grow light with a stand has been added that will help germination and plant growth. Each morning the students eagerly observe the progression of their seedling. Soon we will need to transplant our seedlings. Any donations of plant pots would be appreciated. In math, students did a scavenger hunt to find things that are longer, smaller or same length as their shoe length. We will also be investigating capacity and weight this week. Our community walk will take place on Thursday, April 20th. (weather permitting). We will need at least three volunteers. If interested, please contact Mr. Dallas Butcher. Enjoy the rest of your week! Good afternoon parents and guardians! Our week began with a visit from our artist in residency, Jeff Stockton. He continued to teach children the ability to tell stories using your whole body. We are all excited to perform for the parents on Tuesday, March 21st in the evening.
In physical education, we have tried to do a bit of badminton to improve hand eye coordination! We also were able to go outside and some students got themselves wet when they slipped upon the ice! We participated in our last Sibbald U. and followed it up with a celebration with the whole school on Jersey Day! What a fun school to be a part of! I hope everyone is keeping warm! The forecast for next week appears to be warmer so we will have to get out for some fresh air breaks! As you know the kindergarten class has been coming up with ideas to make the story we have move along with detailed actions. The evening performance for storytelling will be on Tuesday, March 21st and we hope to see you there. If you know that this will not be possible, then please bring this to my attentions ASAP!
In Math, we have been working with each numeral to 10 and taking the given quantity then making 2 parts. By using two colors they are able to show that 9 for example, can be made up of a set of 5 red and 4 blue! The part to whole relationship of numbers is the beginning of learning basic facts! Have a great weekend! |
