It was a very active week that began with a visit from our artist in residency, Jeff Stockton. The children are attentive and responsive to his requests. Together, we are creating a story that will be part of the celebration scheduled for March 21st. The multi-talented Jeff Stockton will be visiting our class on Monday and we are looking forward to having him lead our storytelling session.
In math, we took a brief look at some common three dimensional items from our home such as a box of kraft dinner and a paper towel tube. etc. The focus was on cylinders and rectangular prisms. First they sorted by shape and then they sorted by size! Sorting items is an excellent developmental activity because it helps students to look at common attributes. The book entitled, "It is Okay To Be Different" was read to the class and at times the students were laughing at the hilarious illustrations! We later discussed what we thought made each of us different. Next, they drew a detailed picture in their journals! We also read, "The Very Hungry Caterpillar," a simple story packed with many learning opportunities. A couple for example, 1. Days of the week 2. Lifecycle of a caterpillar! Some students may be able to retell the story to you! Have a great weekend!

I hope all the families enjoyed a beautiful family day on Monday! We enjoyed more time with Mr. Jeff Stockton who not only tells stories but he makes stories up with the help of all the kindergarten students. Over the next few weeks we will be practicing making up our own simple stories in the classroom. The support for PINK T-SHIRT DAY was fabulous! Everyone showed their support for anti-bullying!
As you know, there are different ways to represent numbers and doing tally marks is one way we looked at this week. We will continue to work with numbers as well as 2D and 3D shapes! Have a great weekend! This was a very short week for the kindergarten class that included Valentine’s Day! The children had fun decorating their mail bags and receiving such a wide variety of cards and things! Thank you parents for all your support in making the day such a memorable one. Jeff Stockton entertained us with his harp and excellent ability to tell such imaginative stories! The students enjoyed having a chance to act out different wild animals! He will be back in our classroom on Wednesday, Feb. 22!
We are planning a field trip to the Calgary Corn Maze, June 14 that will be a full day event to mark on your calendars! During this very snowy week we enjoyed discussing how we have changed over the last five years. Growth is a kind of change we go through from the time we are born! It was interesting to listen to them tell the ways we have changed! We had some detectives in our classroom going around the room looking for lower case letters! Students also worked on ways to make 10 using a ten frame and wooden blocks. The nice thing about math is we can show numbers in concrete ways, like pictures!
Today we decorated our Valentine Bags so we are ready for Tuesday, Feb. 14th! Have a great weekend We all enjoyed a very busy week in the kindergarten room! A new centre was added and named "Animal Shelter". We encourage kindness and caring towards animals in the shelter. We also continue to reinforce the identification of upper and lower case letters as well as the numbers one to ten. Singing is always a fun activity especially when there are actions included! The song, "The Ants Go Marching" inspired the students to march in a linear pattern around the classroom! Another popular tune, "Five Little Speckled Frogs" actually demonstrates subtraction! Maybe your son or daughter could sing this for you!
Next week, we will begin to explore CHANGE! Students will have a close examination of the growth they have experienced in the last five years with the items you provided! There are students who still need to provide an article of clothing that no longer fits, a baby picture and a string the length they were at birth! How was your week parents? It felt like the warmer weather was an inspiration to become more active, inside and outside of the school!
Physical education has been an important part of our schedule. With the help of parent volunteers, our students were able to participate in drum fit activity! It is amazing how much energy you can expend after 20 minutes of drumming! The focus for the upcoming month is change! What is change? I am asking that you organize the 3 following items in a large freezer bag with your child's name; 1. baby picture 2. article of clothing (that no longer fits) 3. a string the length of when they were born. Thank you for your support in your child's education. This was an awesome week with the temperatures becoming warm enough for the children to spend time playing outdoors. In the classroom, we continue to develop number sense and numeration skills. We encourage the use of such vocabulary as more than, less than, fewer, plus and altogether, to mention a few.
As a class, we wanted to create a life-size snowman. We brainstormed how this could be accomplished and came up with newspaper and white bags! Everyone pitched in by making balls with the newspapers and stuffing the bags! It now has a home in our display window. Many people have passed by and made positive comments! Thank you parents for your swift reaction to donate the needed materials! Now we just need to give it a name!
Happy New Year!!
I am excited to be working with the Kindergarten class. This was a short week but we have had a great start together! Thank you for being so welcoming to me as I return to work. This week, students have been working on building their understanding of numbers. They completed numbers 1 and 2 in their folders. Many students found the printing of the digit 2 challenging! For inspiration, we listened to Busy Beaver count from 1 - 10! In the gym, we played two new fleeing and chasing games; Ask your child about Freeze Melt Tag and Pizza Tag. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. Sincerely, Mrs. Pauline Ross |
